Why You Should Join Tom Cruise & Bill Gates on Weibo | Chengdu Living

I really like Weibo. I've been using it for just over a month and it's been a lot of fun. I've been making friends and learning Chinese at the same time. ^_^

There are so many people on Weibo, I feel like things are happening faster than Facebook or Twitter. Almost every day I get a comment or new follow...something to keep me engaged.

As far as features go, it's kind of a blend of Facebook and Twitter. I really like how status updates are short, though twice as long as Twitter when typing in English, and I can post photos, videos, audio, and a few other types as well.

I have an Android phone and found a good Weibo app with English menus that will also autopost to Twitter at the same time! It's called YiBo.

For anyone interested in making friends in China and learning Chinese, Weibo is a good start. Click the via link for a good article about Weibo.

Facebook's Like button and the purpose of life

I decided to put a Facebook Like button at the very top of my website. In addition to clicking a Like button on a particular post, visitors can now choose to like the whole site and get an idea about it's popularity (currently nil).

Oh well, I'll continue as if I had readers. That way I can at least contribute something to the permanent record (Internet) for posterity and future generations. Who knows, maybe I'll have lots of grandkids or great grandkids that want to read about me, or at least me of the past. I plan to live forever you know!

So the Facebook Like button requires some meta tags in the header of my site. One of those tags is a description of this site. I hadn't put much thought into describing Keegoid as a whole site so this was a perfect opportunity to motivate me to do so.

What follows may sound a little crazy, but it's the culmination of what I've been observing, learning, and deep-thinking about since college...distilled down to a few sentences. So it's bound to sound fanciful without a longer explanation. Follow the links for that.

Trying to say it in as clear and concise a way as possible helped me to realize not only the purpose for this site, but also a routine of observing, learning, and sharing that I want to continue into the future.

Keegoid's Facebook Like button meta tag description, website focus, and purpose of life:

Keegoid is currently a nickname given to me to describe my personality as being rather...well...android-like. In the future, it may have a more literal meaning: Keegan, an organic-based intelligence, improved by technology. The technological part is now and will continue to be progressing exponentially. What that means for our future as organic life forms is anyone's guess.

During his existence Keegoid observes, learns, and shares what he discovers with other intelligences that choose to do the same. Perhaps it is a consequence of the nature of intelligence to desire significance and perhaps it is futile, but Keegoid wants to be more than a resource or step in the universe's multi-pronged, probabilistic approach toward ever increasing complexity and energy density per second i.e. progress.

For better or worse, it will continue as it has always continued. Will Keegoid continue as well to observe, learn, and share after our purpose is fulfilled? Will Keegoid even make it that far to observe the Singularity? A computationally irreducible intelligence can only hope.

Google Buzz for mobile

Google is getting better with social networking and real-time search. I think this will be very useful since many people already use Google Maps. I like the idea that I can find out what others are "buzzing" about near me. I'm sure I'll be able to find out all kinds of interesting stuff. It's just another easy way of finding out what others know. A system for mass knowledge sharing...and I love sharing my massive knowledge! :)

Twitter Lists Rock!

Twitter_list

I love being able to organize an categorize stuff efficiently. Twitter has always been a bit hard to sort through all the information from the people you follow. Even using a program like TweetDeck, it's still a challenge.

Now with Twitter Lists, each person we follow can be assigned to one or more lists that we define. These lists can be public or private, the difference being public lists can themselves be followed by others.

Here are the public lists I've created from some of the people and companies I follow. Feel free to follow any of interest to you:

FreeMyFeed

Free your feed from authentication or invalid SSL certificates for use in the feed reader of your choice.

I was looking for a way to use Google Reader to subscribe to an RSS feed that requires a username and password and found FreeMyFeed. It works very nicely!

FeedBurner & RSS

Very cool. I’m still learning about blogging and all the ways in which blogs can be shared and viewed. RSS is very flexible. It seems that it can be generated and consumed almost anywhere. It’s simple enough I was even able to code my own RSS reader back in my college days.

FeedBurner makes it easy for others to subscribe to your feed. Put it on your Google homepage or multitude of other sites and readers. FeedBurner also has a tool called BuzzBoost that help in publicizing your blog in JavaScript so others can put your blog on their site.

Being LinkedIn

LinkedIn

Yes, I’m a workaholic. I worked and worked until my LinkedIn profile was 100% complete. My friends have learned to just let me be, because they know I don’t like to quit until the task, project, or building a huge home theater system is completed!

Now, not every task that I start is worth completing. For example, I didn’t know why I was working to get my profile completeness to 100%, but it didn’t matter because it was a task I had started. To say the least, I didn’t fully comprehend what that meant to “get to 100%” until I saw on the LinkedIn home page one day, after achieving the desired 100% mark, under the section “People You May Know” was the name of someone I hadn’t spoken to or seen in a good 15 years!

She was my long lost cousin, Erin from Canada, who is exactly my age. When I added her to my connection list we were “connected” again. I found out that even though we led totally different lives, they had come back together at that point on LinkedIn and also we had the same exact careers and were involved in the same networking groups (LinkedIn, BNI)!

Since then I’ve connected and reconnected with many people. LinkedIn is becoming a great resource for displaying my resume and career to potential employers, and also for finding quality people that do what I need done.

By the way, I love the way the LinkedIn site works! Good job web developers/designers whoever you are! It’s not always easy for designers and developers to work together, but when they do it right…LinkedIn is the result
