You won't believe the detail in this photo! You can zoom in really, really far!

Technical characteristics

The picture was made with the Canon 5D mark II and a 400mm-lens. It consists of 1.665 full format pictures with 21.4 megapixel, which was recorded by a photo-robot in 172 minutes. The converting of 102 GB raw data by a computer with a main memory cache of 48 GB and 16 processors took 94 hours. With a resolution of 297.500 x 87.500 pixel (26 gigapixel) the picture is the largest in the world. (stand December 2009)

Picasa 3.5

This new Picasa is awesome! It automatically finds faces! I love that it connects with my Google Contacts to autofill the names.

It also allows me to geotag my photos on Google Maps. This actually assigns geo coordinates to the photo's meta data. Then I can send that photo to Flickr or other sites that can take advantage of that location data. Saves me some work.

Digital Cameras

I can’t believe some of the features available on consumer level digital cameras these days! This new Nikon COOLPIX P90 has:

  • a 24X zoom
  • 12.1 Megapixels
  • a huge LCD screen
  • image stabilization and motion detection automatically adjusting the image sensor and shutter speed respectively
  • up to 15 frames per second for capturing fast action like a golf swing
  • auto red-eye fix
  • auto focus on up to 12 faces
  • smile mode that automatically detects when your subject smiles and snaps the photo
  • alerts you if someone blinked
  • automatically adjusts for lighting up to ISO 6400
  • ability to focus on objects as close as 1 cm from lense (I’d love to try this on nature shots like a water droplet, or make a tiny spider look giant!)

The only thing missing from my feature wish list is automatic geo-tagging. Maybe the next version will have that and be able to tell me where I left my keys! :)

Update: As feature rich as the Nikon is, it has some quality issues. The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is likely the way to go with many of the same features plus a few more!
